Question of the Day

So it seems a lot of us are curious...

What did Much actually end up achieving through this?

Why did they bail halfway through? There was NO big hack.
They even bailed on the whole 'phind the phreak' contest.

Let me know what you guys think. What did YOU want them
to do? Anything? How could they make it better?

How do they make it better now?

Have you written off Much now,
or are you just glad this annoyance
is over?

Let's discuss this briefly while I tweak my format.

[shoutouts to Mad Mark]

I still think I want to caddleprod these fuckers, and I shall.
Just because their phreak is gone doesn't mean this one is.

Something needs to be done about the state of the nation...'s music station.

A discussion about alternate reality games on a Discord server evoked memories of the phreak615 saga, which is now 11 going on 12 years behind us. What looked like a hacking attempt at first turned out to be a viral marketing ploy that evolved into some sort of contest. And then Much bailed on both for reasons still unknown. No references to phreak615, hacking or anything like that were made during the 2008 MMVAs It did lead to increased ratings for said awards show, though. So there's that.

It's sometimes fun to look back on crap from the past. I remember it all; the hacking attempts, phreak615's call-outs and cryptic posts on his blog, the photo and video responses, and the blue mask I was led to at a random clothing store in downtown Montreal. Holy boats, was that thing ever uncomfortable. I don't know how phreak615 managed to put up with it.

The comments I made in the past were cringeworthy at best, but I've come a long way in 11 years. I moved from Montreal to Toronto and smartened up. Much didn't, however; nowadays, they're little more than a repository for reruns of The Simpsons, South Park, American Dad and even Seinfeld. Nary a music video is played. The MMVAs still exist, although they're now co-branded with iHeartRadio now and literally no one watches them anymore.

I'm owning up to my awful comments. Maybe I went too far with some of them. Maybe I ruffled a few feathers along the way. Not my intention in the slightest, but that's how it went down, unfortunately. How I wish I'd have handled things better back then.

Why was the whole thing dropped? Who knows. Maybe Much underestimated the power of their viewers' intelligence and subsequently abandoned ship because we all figured it out. Or perhaps it wasn't generating the kind of reaction they had hoped for.

For a few months in 2008, we were all armchair detectives, trying to solve a mystery that turned out to be a failed attempt at viral marketing. There were some interesting theories flying around, and some kick-ass videos made by you. I always thought your responses and analyses were the best. I also liked phreak615's personalized responses to your videos.

Hope all has been well with you. Thank you for that fun little trip down memory lane.

Best,
